The unconscious, the shadow, is a vessel of repressed emotions, desires and fantasies; unacknowledged experiences surface in dreams and in art. The figures, frozen mid-movement, embody different aspects of the unconscious. The dark colour stands for the depth of the unknown — the inner space where our fears, desires and experiences are hidden.
About the artist
A painter working with the figure as a state of mind rather than a likeness. Her canvases are built in layers of thinned oil and drips that let earlier images show through, so that each figure carries its own past. She works in series, returning to the same body — often her own — to trace self-knowledge, fear and the unconscious.
