Self-knowledge
Self-knowledge is a long and difficult path of exploring one’s inner world, discovering new facets of personality and learning to accept one’s fears and desires. The painting shows a girl acting as the artist’s self-portrait. She reaches for an abstract band that marks the cut between the known and the unknown — the passage into another state of mind where the honest search begins. Look closer and a translucent layer appears: the hands from an earlier self-portrait, standing for past experiences and emotional states held in memory. The painting is built of several layers, each a stage of the search for one’s true self.
A painter working with the figure as a state of mind rather than a likeness. Her canvases are built in layers of thinned oil and drips that let earlier images show through, so that each figure carries its own past. She works in series, returning to the same body — often her own — to trace self-knowledge, fear and the unconscious.
